Recently, twenty-four PHCS students participated in this year's Battle of the Books Competition. There were six teams of students in grades 4-6.
For the book battle, sixteen challenging chapter books are selected by a committee. The students have to read, understand, and be able to correctly answer questions about all books, as well as give the authors' names. In order to be successful, the students stay after school most weekdays to discuss, make study questions, and practice titles/authors.
Local battles determine winning teams to represent each school in the regional competition. This year was the first battle held in our school. The students and their coach worked hard from October-May on their extra reading, demonstrating perseverance and determination.
Our local book battle winning team was The Okily Dokily Readers, who advanced to the regional battle and competed against 11 other school groups. They did a fantastic job and many adults commented on how well they did, as well as the sportsmanship they exhibited! A special shout out to Mrs. Lori White who coached all six teams in addition to organizing and running the local battle. We are very proud of all who participated!
